The Big City (U)

Dir: Satyajit Ray, India, 1963, some subtitles,130 mins

‘One of the most rewarding screen experiences of our time. There is not a person who would not identify immediately and deeply with the characters; I warmly encourage you to see it.’ Roger Ebert

‘a beautifully fashioned and emotionally balanced contemplation of change in the thinking, the customs and the manners of the Indian middle-class.’ The New York Times

A simple story, beautifully told.  Arati is a young housewife who lives with her husband, children and in-laws in 1950s Calcutta.  Money is short, and finally Arati has to go out to work.  While she gradually discovers her individuality and strength, her new role challenges traditional values and causes all sorts of problems at home.
